History

The area was originally inhabited by Māori and the name "Raglan" comes from the Māori name "Whāingaroa", which means "the long pursuit". European settlers arrived in the mid-19th century and established farms in the area. In the early 20th century, Raglan became a popular holiday destination for people from Hamilton and Auckland and tourism has been an important part of the local economy ever since.

Raglan is located on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand, about 48 kilometres west of Hamilton. It is situated on the shore of Raglan Harbour, which opens out to the Tasman Sea. The town is surrounded by hills and farmland and there are several beautiful beaches in the area, including Raglan Beach and Whale Bay.

As of the 2018 New Zealand census, Raglan had a population of 3,051. The median age of residents is 39 years old and the majority of the population is European, with significant Māori and Pacific Islander communities as well.
