History

Nihotupu was originally inhabited by the Māori people, who named the area after a local stream. The first European settlement in the area occurred in the mid-19th century, with timber milling and kauri gum digging being the main industries. The area remained largely rural until the 1960s, when it began to be developed as a water catchment area for the Auckland region.
