History
The town of Lincoln was established in the 1860s as a service center for the surrounding farming community. It was named after the University of Lincoln in England, which had ties to the area's early settlers. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Lincoln was a major center for the New Zealand flax industry, which produced fibers used for rope and other products. Today, the town is home to Lincoln University, which was established in 1878 as the South Island's first agricultural college.
