History

The town was founded in 1886, when the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company extended its line to the area. The town was named after William Hort Levin, a director of the railway company. The surrounding area was predominantly used for farming, particularly for the production of wool and dairy products. Over time, the town grew and became an important center for the surrounding agricultural area.

Levin is situated on the southwestern coast of the North Island. It is surrounded by the Tararua Range to the east and the Tasman Sea to the west. The town is located on the banks of the Waiopehu River, which runs through the Horowhenua District.
