History
The Deans family arrived in Canterbury in 1843 and were granted land in what is now known as the Riccarton area of Christchurch. In 1868, they built Levels Homestead on their property in the nearby district of Timaru. The homestead served as the family's rural retreat and was used for hunting and fishing trips. It remained in the Deans family until 1968, when it was sold to the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.
