History
The area around Goodwood was originally inhabited by the Ngāti Koata and Ngāti Rārua iwi (tribes) before European settlement. The town was established in the mid-19th century as a stop on the Nelson to Blenheim coach route. The town's name is believed to have been derived from Goodwood Park in England. The town grew in the early 20th century with the establishment of several orchards and vineyards in the surrounding area.
