History
The area now known as Cormacks was originally inhabited by the Maori people, who were later displaced by European settlers in the mid-19th century. The town was named after one of the early European settlers in the area.

Cormacks is located in a valley in the foothills of the Southern Alps. The area is surrounded by dense forests and is home to several rivers and creeks, including the Hokitika River which runs through the town.
