History
Burnham was founded in the late 19th century as a railway town. The town grew quickly and became an important center for the local farming industry. During World War I, Burnham was used as a training camp for New Zealand soldiers and the town's population grew as a result. Today, Burnham Military Camp is still an important training center for the New Zealand Defence Force.
