History

Ballance was founded in the late 19th century as a railway settlement. The town grew slowly during the early part of the 20th century, but it experienced a period of growth during the 1950s and 1960s when the local dairy industry expanded. The town was named after James Ballance, a former Prime Minister of New Zealand who was born in the nearby town of Glenavy.
