History
Shag Point was named after the shags (or cormorants) that can be seen in the area. The town's economy was primarily based on fishing and whaling, with several whaling stations operating in the area in the late 1800s. The town was also home to a railway station on the Main South Line, which connected Dunedin to Invercargill.
