History
Ikamatua was originally settled by the Maori people, who were later joined by European explorers and settlers. The town played an important role in the West Coast gold rush during the 1860s and many of the old gold mining sites and historic buildings can still be seen today. The town was also an important center for timber milling and coal mining during the early 1900s.
