History
Dunedin was founded in 1848 by Scottish settlers and its name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh, which is "Dùn Èideann". The city grew rapidly during the gold rush of the 1860s and became one of the wealthiest cities in New Zealand at the time. Dunedin has a rich architectural heritage, with many of its historic buildings still standing today.
