History
The area now known as Coromandel was originally inhabited by the Maori people, who were later displaced by European settlers in the mid-19th century. The town grew rapidly during the gold rush of the 1860s and many historic buildings from this era still remain today. The town was named after the HMS Coromandel, which visited the area in the late 18th century.
