History
The Buried Village was established in the mid-19th century as a thriving settlement for the local Maori people and European settlers. In 1886, the nearby Mount Tarawera erupted, burying the village and surrounding areas in ash and mud. The village was rediscovered in the 1930s and has since been excavated and restored as a historic site.
